Thursday 2nd April was an exciting day in the English Department: Frank Cottrell Boyce was visiting! The famous children’s author was here to attend the Upper and Lower Book Club who were meeting to discuss, respectively, his novels ‘Millions’ and ‘Cosmic’.
Around 50 fans (including Miss Hopwood, Miss Hawkes and Mrs Ray) gathered in the library to hear some funny tales told by Frank; some were even brave enough to tell him what they thought of his books – scary!

Frank also did a reading from ‘Cosmic’, the bit where Liam is mistaken for the Head of Media Studies on his first day at secondary school. If you want to find out why and what happens you’ll have to read the book.
The session was finished off with a marathon book signing session. Thanks go to our librarian Mrs Moorhead for sorting that out.
During period 4, Miss Hackney’s Year 13 group got a treat: Frank came to talk to them about the films they’d been studying, as penned by him: ’24 Hour Party People’, ‘Grow Your Own’ and ‘Millions’.

Finally, it was Miss McCarthy’s Year 8 class’s turn. They’ve been reading ‘Millions’ over the last few weeks and were bowled over when Frank joined their class to read the next chapter to them. He also answered lots of their questions.
All in all, there were a lot of giggles and enjoyment had by all. Miss McCarthy bought Frank a book on the punk band The Clash (one of his favourite) to say thank you. She’s going to be cheeky and ask him to come in again next year so make sure you’re involved if you missed out this time.
