English should be precise, accurate, informed and informative.  At St. Hilda’s, we aim to ensure that this is the case.  We also believe that our subject is the best thing on the curriculum – a view we hold in the face of strong opposition from every other subject in the school!  Above all, we believe that English is FUN: encompassing the areas of reading, writing, drama and media as we do, we are uniquely placed to guide pupils into an appreciation of the world through its great writing and philosophies.

Drama provides many opportunities for learning, self-development and enjoyment. We have excellent state-of-the-art facilities in our new drama studio, which is used not only for lessons but also for performances by visiting groups, such as Fuse Theatre and Shakespeare in Schools, and school productions. We have recently mounted a number of very successful productions in the studio, including Denise Deegan’s Daisy Pulls It Off and Mr McGregor’s Garden, adapted from Beatrix Potter by our own Dr. Paul Burns. On 27th March the current Year 11 GCSE group presented their devised piece, Deadly Days.
Media Studies, though relatively new, is proving to be a very popular option amongst the sixth form students. It encompasses all aspects of the media, from film and television to website design and video games. Using our new digital video camera equipment, and extensive PC based editing suite, students have thoroughly enjoyed the creation and study of media texts. We hope that this course will continue to grow, and present the amazing opportunities for study and development that it has shown so far.
