Music at St Hilda’s

St. Hilda’s has an ever growing music department and there is always something going on! Key Stage 3 lessons comprise of keyboard work, singing, composing and listening tasks. Each lesson presents a new and exciting task for the pupils from composing music for films, singing to the class and recording a class cd. Each pupil is given the opportunity to learn different instruments through the Schools Music Service which is explained below.

Music at Key Stage 4 is just as exciting. Pupils will sit the Edexcel GCSE music examination. This covers music from the Renaissance to Modern Dance and Britpop! All pupils will need to compose during this course and there is a strong emphasis on performance. Pupils showcase their performance coursework in collaboration with the students of the Drama department to an invited audience, and take part in many different concerts throughout the year.

Extra Curricular

The department has two large thriving choirs which are non auditioning. Both choirs recently rehearsed for Mr. Yates’ retirement service at the Cathedral.  They joined forces for this event and the 70 strong choir performed ‘I’m goin’ up a yonder’ by Walter Hawkins. The choirs will both be performing at a school concert in June.

The school has an ever expanding instrumental ensemble. Both the ensemble and the choirs have performed at the annual Prize Giving Ceremony and the Christmas Concerts, both in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral. The ensemble are currently playing ’Soul Bossa Nova,’ a lively and challenging piece.

Every pupil is given the opportunity to learn a selection of instruments through the Schools Music Service. An application form is available from Miss Linforth in the music department, but one will be in the new intake welcome pack .

The department recently ran ‘Let us entertain you!’ This show  was a cross between the ‘X Factor,’ ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and ‘Britain's Got Talent.’ Girls from across the school were involved and it was produced by the Year 10 GCSE music class. The final was on April 2nd 2009 in the school hall at 7pm. We hope you were able to attend, and enjoyed the performances.

Feel free to contact Miss Linforth, Head of Music, should you have any questions.
