Art and Design

The Creative and Cultural Industries are some of the fastest growing sectors. Qualifications in Art and Design can lead to a wide variety of Further and Higher Education courses and careers.
The Art and Design department at St. Hilda’s strives to provide an environment within which young people can explore their creativity and learn skills to equip them with the ability to express themselves and communicate their ideas visually.
Pupils are introduced to a range of artists, designers and cultures. There are opportunities for cross curricular links and visits to galleries, museums and sources for primary observation.
Art naturally presents a forum where essential Personal Learning and Thinking Skills are exercised and nourished through a broad spectrum of styles and approaches. Pupils are taught through initially structured courses to build skills and confidence to allow learners to develop their own work with increasing independence.
‘Pupils explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. In art, craft and design, pupils reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries that enrich their lives.’  (QCA)
All pupils study Art and Design at Key Stage 3.  Pupils can opt for GCSE Art and Design at Key stage 4.  AS and A2 Art and Design is offered for students at Key Stage 5.  We would normally accept candidates who have achieved a C or above at GCSE, although we do consider applications from those who have not studied Art and Design at GCSE subject to a trial period.
