£5000 Innovation Bursary won by St. Hilda's!
Back
26 November 2009
We recently put in a bid to the City Learning Centre for support with an innovative project which sees our Art, Media Studies and Music Departments working together.
We were delighted to learn that we have been awarded a bursary of £5000, which will be used to purchase Applemac computers and editing software plus an animation package.
The project looks at slavery.
In October, our students visited the International Slavery Museum.
This was followed soon after by a workshop in school which taught the girls to make masks.
Over the next two months, they will be exploring their themes, creating sketches and scanning photos.
Next January and February, they will be involved in a Photoshop workshop which will allow them to adapt their work.
At the same time, pupils studying music will begin composing pieces and choreographing movements for a performance using the masks.
Media Students will film the completed performance in April, and editing of the film will follow, with film and artwork being ‘layered’ during May.
This work will be presented to Holy Cross Primary School, one of the schools with whom we regularly work, in June.
Our students will then undertake a modified form of the project with pupils from Holy Cross, allowing them to complete their own response and exhibition.
This kind of cross-curricular project, with its opportunities for exploring a topic in depth, is very much a feature of the enterprise for which St. Hilda’s is becoming well-known.
Miss Hackney, Miss Hopwood and Miss Linforth, who will lead the pupils in this work, are justifiably excited about this work.
We will showcase their achievements during the Autumn term in 2010, when all aspects of the work will be complete – for this phase, anyway, as the team have ambitious plans to pursue a similar topic in concord with one of our international school partners.
