Business & Enterprise

Enterprise in education is a core aspect in St Hilda’s remit and we want to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to enhance their skills and ability through various enterprising activities.

As the school’s strap line indicates, we have concentrated on being ‘enterprising’; but what does this mean in real terms?

Enterprise involves students in...

Ø thinking for themselves
Ø taking on challenge
Ø handling uncertainty
Ø responding to change
Ø coming up with new ideas and ways of doing things
Ø being willing to step forward and take responsibility

In fact, it’s about developing all those skills which equip us for life.

Most courses are free and open to every pupil. For more information please contact: Miss J Kelly or Mrs J Dunn on 0151 733 2709 or e-mail bec@st-hildas.com.

Throughout the year, we concentrate on developing extra-curricular activities.  At lunchtimes and after school, pupils can be found learning and developing new skills.

Social Enterprise

Over the last couple of years, we have moved towards greater involvement in ‘Social Enterprise’, very much in keeping with the Christian ethos of our school, by asking pupils to transform their clubs into companies.  They sell shares, raise funds, and select a charity to which their profits will be donated.  In this way, they learn business and entrepreneurial skills, but can also respond to the many needs in the world today.

Soap Making Company

For 2008 we have launched a soap making company where the girls make soap from scratch, package it and sell it to family and friends and at trade fairs.

Jewellery making

Again another new course for 2008/09.  The girls have been learning the skill of making costume jewellery.  They have set themselves up as a school business and plan to sell their products at the school trade fair on the 26th June.  All profits from this business will go to supporting the girls taking part in World Challenge to Morocco in the Summer Term.

6th form students in Fairtrade shop

Our longest established company is Fair Trade, run by the Sixth Form.  They sell Fair Trade chocolate at lunch times, and take complete responsibility for stock control and book-keeping.

This year, they have decided to support the whole of their year by putting their profits into the Leavers’ Ball: the work of a few benefiting many.

Stage Makeup
Our stage makeup course has been running from 2007 and is very popular with the girls.  They learn the art of stage make up and get to practise on each other.

Hildebear Company which developed a school mascot and sold it to the year 11 and year 13 leavers.

Basic Arabic
This is a short term course available to students travelling to Morocco as part of the World Challenge expedition.  They have been learning basic Arabic to ensure they can communicate with the locals and to be aware of issues related to the country.

Sign Language & Deaf Awareness
Our Sign Language and Deaf Awareness course has been running
since 2006.  This is a course offered to all pupils and is run in association with Merseyside Society for Deaf People (MSDP). Many of our students have successfully completed their BSL level 1 certificate.

Trampolining
A very popular club with the younger pupils and a great way of keeping fit and healthy.  This course is facilitated by Everton Tigers and has been running for over a year.

Cheerleading
Cheerleading is a very popular course with the pupils in our lower school, though it is available to the whole school.  This course has been running since January 2008 and is coached by Everton Tigers.  The cheerleading girls perform to the public on open days and events.

We also have a Stationery Shop which opens 2 days a week selling very reasonably priced stationery and some luxury items.  All profits from the stationery shop will be shared equally between a charity of the girls' choice and used to help fund a World Challenge trip to Morocco in the summer term.

Film Making
This was a course run in association with FACT. Students learnt the key skills of filmmaking and even filmed and edited their own project with partner primary schools.

These are just a few of our courses and with new ones being added continually, the school is always buzzing with activity. Our focus is on ensuring that all pupils experience enterprise activities through the curriculum.  We are now looking at increasing curricular input through an adapted approach to lessons.  To be an enterprising school, everyone has to be enterprising – fortunately, that’s what St. Hilda’s is all about!
